January 22., 2024.
A performance by the Harag György Company opened MAFESZT

On 22 January, Hungarian Culture Day, the festival MASZÍN - Hungarian Theatre Association, which this year took place in Miercurea Ciuc, started with the performance of Amphitryon by the Harag György Company.

The Csíki Játékszín will host MAFESZT, the annual touring festival of the Hungarian Theatre Association, from 22 to 27 January, where MAFESZT member theatres will present the best of their recent productions to each other and to the audience. But it is also an opportunity for staff from the different departments of the member theatres to take part in workshops and exchanges - this year the administrative staff of the member theatres will take part in this type of professional meeting. But as part of the festival, MASZÍN also holds its annual general assembly, where the directors of the theatres not only evaluate the events of the past months, but also take decisions for the future.

Following the establishment of the Hungarian Theatre Association in 2017, the first such festival was held in 2018 in Satu Mare. Now, the Satu Mare company has the honour of performing at the Csíki Játékszín the opening performance of the festival on the Day of Hungarian Culture.

The festival, with a total of 10 performances, includes the Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre in Timisoara, the Harag György Company of the Northern Theatre Satu Mare, the Tomcsa Sándor Theatre in Odorheiu Secuiesc, the Szigligeti Theatre Oradea and the host, the Csíki Játékszín.
At the festival, the Harag György Company performed Amphitryon, directed by four-time UNITER and Jászai Prize winner Bocsárdi László.

„Amphitryon, the great general, returns home triumphant after a long war. His wife, Alcmene, does not leap for joy into his arms. She says it is only a few hours since they shared the pleasures of love together. None of them know that they are at the mercy of the gods' evil play. Zeus, the god of gods, has assumed the image of a husband to spend the night with Alcmene.

The characters in the play are in agony as they search for a way out of a labyrinth that defies human reason, in an uncertain and unknowable world that is not unfamiliar to the modern viewer. We fight for the right to clarity and always come up short.”.

And the audience joined the actors in their search for a way out of that particular labyrinth, they became aware of the unfathomable world and the social problems presented in the performance, and rewarded the actors and creators with a long applause.
