Bányai Tamás

Tamás Bányai was born in 1962 and joined the Kaposvár Theatre in 1981, becoming Head of Lighting in 1984 before starting formal training at the Hungarian Academy of Drama and Film, Budapest. He assisted the lighting designer Dominique Bruguière on Fous de Chekhov, the simultaneous performance of four Chekhov dramas, at the Théâtre Saint Denis, Paris. Since 1990 he has worked as a freelance lighting designer for several leading directors, including Tamás Ascher, Gábor Zsámbéki, János Mohácsi, László Magács, Zoltán Bezerédi and László Keszég. He worked on Ascher’s productions of Gombrowicz’s Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy, Ionesco’s The Bald Soprano/ The Lesson and Ostrovsky’s The Forest at the Burgtheater, Vienna, Tartuffeat the Berliner Ensemble and Don Giovanni at the Lyon Opera; and on Schilling’s staging of Richard III at the Piccolo Teatro, Milan. Since 2000 he has been the lighting designer with Krétakör Színház, where his credits have included NEXXT, Liliom, Possessed, W – Workers’ Circus, Leonce and Lena, Fatherland, my all…, The Misanthrope and BLACKland. Since 2002 he has taught at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. He is also a designer of installations, exhibitions and interior lighting.
