September 16., 2021.
The first performance of the season will be held on September 17 by the Harag György Company

The Harag György Company of the Northern Theatre of Satu Mare will hold the first big stage performance of the season on Friday, September 17 from 7 p.m.

The performance is based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s “unhistorical historical comedy,” written in 1950 at the age of twenty-nine, which depicts the loss of power of Romulus Augustus, the last Western Roman Emperor, and the end of a declining Empire. The director of the production is László Bocsárdi, a two-time UNITER and Jászai Prize-winning theatre artist, director of the Tamási Áron Theatre in Sfântu Gheorghe
“It is always a pleasure when our company can work with such a large calibre director.

A good relationship and a “schedule” were established with László Bocsárdi years ago, on the basis of which he directs a play here, in every two years. Exactly two years ago, on September 17, we presented Scapin, and before that, The Comedy of Errors which was invited to multiple festivals. I feel that during the joint work we could learn a lot from the very current, contemporary theatrical language, which we also share with the audience through the performance” says István Gedő Bessenyei, the artistic director of the company.

German culture Extremely important for German theatre is the perception of culture based on morality case of Dürrenmatt, too, it can be seen in a nuanced way that it disguises the immorality of the world, processing the experiences of World War II — that is, in relation to the atrocities of an extremely aggressive, mass-manipulating empire, he states that it is not moral to protect a corrupt society.
“The writer speaks of this in a tragicomic vision with provocative means. He deals with the fate of the world while articulating that neither the past nor the future isn’t at our fingertips, only the present. We can do as much as the present allows us. Durrenmatt wrote a timeless piece in which he confuses antiquity with the present of the 1940s and 1950s, in which historical figures appear in it, but treats them in the context of the artistic narrative - so we cannot blame historical connections on it. The play features post-war trauma, the imprint of II. World War on Europe, on European culture, and now I feel that, unfortunately, the winds of war can be seen in action in our everyday lives, so I feel very much about the state that the piece evokes for us. The writer shows a view of a society in which man can no longer influence the history of mankind. And society is in a crisis, and today we all live in a crisis situation” says László Bocsárdi.

The theme of The Great Romulus is current, though it was written quite a few years ago: it foretells a change in ordinary life, the fall of an empire and a civilization. The last emperor of the Roman Empire, Romulus the Great, seems to foresee the fate of himself and the Empire: he waits for Its fall with incomprehensible calm and tolerates, when the Germans begin to attack his Empire.
"The main idea of the upcoming performance: one's idea of being able to change the direction of the course of history, not other vain vanities"
