About the performance
Life is far from easy for Reb Tevye, a dairyman living in the remote village of Anatevka in the Russian Empire. The head of the family clings to the Jewish religion and traditions, but his children are drifting further and further away from them: his daughters want to marry for love, without an intermediary, and their suitors are not the young men their father imagines, because they are falling further and further away from the boundaries of the Jewish faith and heritage. In the meantime, he has to deal with history, as the Russian Tsar orders the expulsion of the Jews from the village.
A bittersweet musical about parental love, respect, discipline, power and love, the captivating story is accompanied by familiar melodies, this time in a chelezmer version instead of a big orchestra accompaniment.
The play is based on The Daughters of Tevye, as well as other short stories by Aléchem Salem. The story has been adapted in many ways, and the musical version was first performed on Broadway in New York on 22 September 1964, and has been a hit on stages around the world ever since. It was made into a film in 1969, directed by Norman Jewison, and won three of the five nominations at the 44th Academy Awards.
