Csákányi Eszter

Eszter Csákányi trained at the studio of the National Theatre, Budapest, graduating in 1973. She joined the Kaposvár Theatre, where she became a leading figure of Hungarian realistic theatre and where her roles included Sally Bowles (Cabaret), Roxie Hart (Chicago), Marika (Liliom), Stella (A Streetcar Named Desire), Masha (The Seagull) and Winnie-the-Pooh. She was subsequently a member of the Katona József Theatre (1992–2000), where her roles included the title role in Kárpáti’s Everywoman, Puck (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Mariedl (The First Ladies), Cecilia (Stella) and Mrs Peachum (The Threepenny Opera). Her other theatre appearances include the title role in Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy at the Burgtheater, Vienna. As a singer she is a noted exponent of Brecht/Weill songs. She has been a member of Krétakör Színház since 2000; her roles for the Company have included Mrs Muskát (Liliom), Frei/Homeless/Bar-Singer in János Térey’s The Nibelung Residency,BLACKland, CSÁKÁNYIEszter in Arsinoé (The Misanthrope), Erna (Kasimir and Karoline), and Arkadina (The Seagull). She has won the Hungarian Critics’ Prize several times and is a holder of the most prestigious artist’s award: The Kossuth Prize.
