REFLECT – Multicultural Festival 12th – 15th november 2023, Satu Mare

Our festival promotes the cultural and linguistic diversity of this very special region of Europe through theatre, offering audiences the opportunity to experience performances in Romanian, Hungarian and Ukrainian languages.

Each theatre company will bring to the audiences of the two countries outstanding productions, dealing with current and specific themes of the communities they come from, which will stir emotion and reflection in the hearts of Ukrainian and Romanian audiences, regardless of the language spoken.

Our event provides a unique platform for interaction and cultural exchange between artists, crossing geographical, linguistic and ethnic barriers. We will have a series of workshops and discussions during the festival, where participants will be able to share experiences and learn from each other and get to know the audiences of both cultural spaces.

But perhaps the most important aspect of this meeting between our theatres is that it wants to give a signal of normality in such an absurd period and to convey to the spectators and theatre people that we need each other and that when bombs are falling in the surroundings to build a theatre is the gesture of the greatest resistance in the face of terror!

"OTVETKA" by Neda Nezhdana
The performance “Otvetka” is a one-woman play, based on the play “OTVETKA@UA” written by the Ukrainian author Neda Nezhdana. The play is about a pregnant woman whose beloved husband was killed by a Russian sniper’s bullet during the war that Russia started in Ukraine in 2014. At the same time, her friend invited her to the wedding in Russia. The relevance of this story is that Ukrainian women throughout Ukraine still have husbands and boyfriends who are fighting against the Russians. And this means that thousands of women aged 20-40 remain alone in the difficult world of war. The play gives us an opportunity not to forget the war, and reminds us that the struggle continues.

"CHIRIKLI" by Oleksandr Gavrosh
The performance “Chirikli” is based on the biographical prose of the modern Romani writer Mykola Burmeka-Dyury who lives in Velyki Komiaty in the Vynohradiv district. This is the first documentary monodrama in Transcarpathia, in which there are no fabricated facts. The monodrama tells us about the fate of a mother and her son, their relationship and the difficult life of the Roma community. The performance arouses real emotions, leaving indifferent no one in the auditorium.

“THE RETURNING” by Fredrik Brattberg
“The Returning” is trying to adress questions about death and the pain associated with it. Death cannot simply be challanged, it comes with consequences. How much can we endure until we have had enough? How much uncertainty shall we accept until we make a decision, no matter how painful it might be? The Returning can be percieved as a dark comedy, but the humour disappears in the overwhelming ambience of the dialogue and laughter turns into bitter crying.

“CHAOS” by Mika Myllyaho
Sofia, Julia and Emmi are trying to hold their own on all fronts, helped by the fact that they regurarly get together to laugh, have a good debate and hold each other up to the mirror. They push their bounderies, and although they go through jail and chaos, they learn that standing up for yourself is the only way to true self-knowledge.
